This workshop coincides with the 595th anniversary of Erasmus’ arrival in Brussels, where he was re-working his earlier translation of the New Testament.

The notion of “Shadow” was introduced in psychology by Psychoanalist Carl Gustav Jung. He considered it to be the unknown dark side of one’s personality. Being instinctive and irrational, Jung viewed the shadow as prone to psychological projection, such that a perceived personal inferiority is recognised as a perceived moral deficiency in someone else. Jung writes that if these projections remain hidden, “The projection-making factor (the shadow-archetype) has a free hand and can realize its object–if it has one–or bring about some other situation characteristic of its power.” These projections insulate and harm individuals by acting as a constantly thickening veil of illusion between the ego and the real world. “Everyone carries a shadow,” Jung wrote, “and the less it is embodied in the individual’s conscious life, the blacker and denser it is.”

To access their shadows, participants will employ various creative techniques (both conscious and sub-conscious), several of which were developed by EM Alumni Desiderius Erasmus & CG Jung, as a base of self-knowledge. Participants will bind personal content (images, metaphors, texts, and symbols), which they either brought with them or selected during the workshop, into a small personal book that is representative of the shadow-archetype.

For this reason, we are requesting that participants bring “things of value” like texts, photos, poems, reflections, newspaper items or other information that could trigger one’s awareness of one’s shadow. The workshop includes presentations by Ive Van Bostraeten, Sue Spaid, and the bookbinder Jean-François Paquay. The €25 registration fee includes additional didactic and binding materials, a tour of the museum, a bio-vegetarian lunch (served in the garden weather permitting), a closing reception.

To register, send an e-mail to : info.ecole.mondiale@gmail.com (max 24 participants)

While most of the talks will be in English, we welcome both French and Dutch speakers, as our core group is native in all three. Moreover, we will offer didactic material in all three languages.

Erasmus Museum

Rue du Chapitre / Kapittelstraat 31 1070 BRUSSELS www.erasmushouse.museum

NED

Fieldstation I-CARUS : Workshop “Shadow-bookbinding”

20-05-2016 // 10h-16h // Erasmus Huis // Brussel
